Using eyelash extensions, synthetic eyelashes made of chemical fibres or other materials are attached individually to natural eyelashes. A lot of people think that eyelash extensions are nothing more than high-end false lashes. But they couldn't be further from the truth. False lashes typically come in a strip that is glued along your lash line. These false lashes often need to be removed and reapplied everyday and they have a reputation for falling off at the most embarrassing times. Eyelash extensions are painstakingly attached to the base of your natural lashes one at a time. This produces completely natural looking results that are undetectable leaving you looking like you were born with those luscious lashes. And because they are attached directly to your lashes they will stay in place until that eyelash naturally sheds. This means that it won't be noticeable when they fall out because it will be one at a time over the course of several weeks.

Eyelash Shedding

Has anyone heard of eyelash shedding. This is something most of us don't know. The eyelashes also go through a growth cycle where they shed and regrow. So the next time you notice stray eyelashes on your cheeks or palm, don’t get scared especially if you have opted for eyelash extensions.

What are common eyelash extension mistakes you should avoid?

Making a mistake is a last unavoidable part of a artist's learning process, especially when you are just starting. But the truth is that you can avoid these mistakes even if you're just a beginner if you know what to do.

1. Placing the under-eye pad too high on the waterline
Placing the under-eye pad too high on the waterline is a common mistake when you get too close to the waterline and the client closes their eyes. This causes the lash pad to shift up, leading to watery eyes and bruising. We often mistakenly believe this is due to an allergic reaction to the adhesive, but it is actually caused by the pad scratching the client's eyes. The simplest way to prevent this is to consistently readjust the patches every 20-30 minutes, ensuring the client's comfort and avoiding any discomfort caused by the pads. If your client's eyes become red and watery during the session, there could be various causes for this, but this could be one of them. So, be vigilant and make sure you're not positioning the pads too high. You can easily avoid this problem by using tape instead of pads. However, if you prefer to use under-eye pads, tape the lower lashes to the top of the pad. Make sure to secure the lower lashes with some paper tape.

2. Utilizing unsensitised lash tools
- If you ignore your lash station tools, including cleansing brushes, lash tweezers, lash wands, even your hands and either lash tools, it might transfer eye infections to your lash client's To maintain a hygienic and safe environment for your lash clients, I strongly advise making cleanliness and sterilization a top priority in your lash studio, lash room, and working area. Regularly clean and sterilize these spaces after each client to ensure the highest standards of hygiene and client satisfaction. Even of you clean the adhesive from your lash tweezer with a lash cleanser solution like this, you still need to properly disinfect your lash tools including tweezer in between each client to avoid eye infections.

3. Pulling eyelash extensions that are too heavy for the client's natural lashes
- The highest diameter you can use on a client's natural lash is 0.8. Some lash artists use 0.20, but this is a controversial topic. We recommend using a 0.15 - 0.18, depending on the client's natural lashes condition. A healthy and natural solid lash can hold only 0.25. Applying heavy extensions can cause damage to the natural lashes. It is important to carefully assess each of the client's lashes, even though it may require some extra time. However, this will ultimately benefit your client as their lashes will stay healthy and strong, thanks to your meticulous lashing service. Additionally, ensure that you are using the appropriate weight for each lash to maintain their well-being.

4. Not using the right lash length
- It is essential to pick the correct lash length that will not damage the client's natural lashes. The rule of thumb is to go up 2-3mm from the client's natural lashes. If your client's lashes are 11mm, you can apply a 13-14mm lash on this natural lash without risking damage. The client's lashes should also be mapped out so that there is a smooth transition between all lengths. To achieve optimal lash mapping and create a symmetrical and complementary look, it is crucial for lash artists to avoid a common mistake - using the same lash size throughout the eye. Instead, utilizing a range of lengths is essential. By incorporating various lash lengths, you can achieve stunning results that enhance the overall appearance.

5. Not shaking your lash adhesive
- Before using your adhesive, shake it well. When you pinch and get a tin droplet out of it, it'll lay flat and your glue should have a little bubble. To ensure the ingredients are thoroughly mixed, shake it by hand for at least 1 or 2 minutes side by side. Your second drop will be freshest with all the ingredients mixed. - Never shake your adhesive up and down. Each time you shake your lash adhesive, the nozzle tends to rise. When it comes to thinner viscosity glue, it becomes more delicate. Shaking it vigorously can cause the cap to get stuck, leading to improper functioning of the adhesive and causing issues for you. If you accidentally drop it and it forms a puddle, continue shaking it gently until you see actual bubbles form. When you achieve the optimal bond and the adhesive is in a puddle state, dipping your extension in it won't result in proper adhesion to the lash. In fact, it may even come off while you brush it.

6. Applying too much adhesive to the lashes
- Dip the extension into the small adhesive bubble with just the perfect amount of oil. Make sure it comes out as a single tiny drop on the actual extension, you don't want multiple bubbles on the lash extensions because that would be excessive adhesive. To ensure a seamless application, start by attaching one clip to the bubble and applying a small amount of glue to the base. Then, gently glide it over the natural lash. It is important to avoid using excessive adhesive as it can result in stickiness, which can potentially damage the natural lashes. Moreover, the baby lashes will adhere to the extensions and the lash, clumping together.
